Purpose:

Students will learn the power of the digital image by creating a storyboard of 6-10 photos that documents their lives. The digital image has the power that is in many ways comparable with the impact of storytelling through literature. In this project, students will be "storytelling" through the digital image of their own lives by taking black and white photographs.

Objective:
Overall: Students will create a series of documentary style photographs describing the different elements of their lives. They will describe and reflect in writing how their photographs are documentary by using content vocabulary.

Students will understand the impacts of digital imagery through storytelling. Each photograph should convey a story or meaning that gives depth and understanding into their own lives. This project is a way for students to document their own lives, create powerful images that convey a message, and learn about documentary photography. They will create these storyboards in Photoshop in a horizontal format that reads from left to right, similar to a book. Emphasis will be placed on size (choosing photographs that should be larger than the rest as an emphasis point).

Prior Research: First Research Assignment (Step 1):

Please research the meaning of these terms and email to Ms. O'Ryan (emily_oryan@dpsk12.org) a written and visual image (graphic/photograph) of what these terms mean:

1. What is the difference between Instagram and Facebook?
2. Documentary Photography. Include 6 images of documentary photography. Check out websites:

3. Please find three documentary photographers, research what they have photographed write a summary of what their work is about and the impact it has made on culture in the same email. Also, attach a couple of their photos to the email.

Step 5: Peer Review. Pull up all your photos and work with a partner. Narrow down your photos to 6-10.
Discuss with the partner the following question:1. How does this image communicate a message about the artist?
Then in sketchbook, write a reflection on how it felt to go over your images with a partner. 1. Were they able to see the story?2. Did you learn anything about yourself through their perspective?3. How many photos did you decide to throw out? Why?
Step 6: Review and Critique. Visit a minimum of 4 students.Silent Critique. Place sketchbook by computer and have open your website with this assignment. Write on sketchbook the following three questions (space them out so students can write their comments answering these questions):
1. What is the story presented in these group of photographs? 2. How successful was the editing for the group of photos? 3. Are any of the photos unnecessary?
